Counseling Services

» INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING FOR ADULTS AND ADOLESCENTS

At ExtraCare Health Services, we see individual counseling as being invaluable in treating the disease of chemical or alcohol dependency. Our board-certified and licensed counselors are trained to help clients raise their self-esteems and empower them to take effective control of their lives. ExtraCare counselors help clients and their families develop a supportive recovery program.

» FAMILY COUNSELING

At ExtraCare, we feel chemical addiction is a disease that affects the entire family, because it is often disrupted by a person abusing substance. This disruption will ultimately have a negative effect on the entire family system, including spouses, parents and siblings. At our facilities, family members are counseled by certified alcohol and drug counselors and/or psychologists, depending upon the needs of each family. Our goal is to teach families how to intervene and help the addicted person, and once again return to a happy, healthy and well-functioning system.

» GROUP COUNSELING

Group Counseling at ExtraCare focuses on helping clients bolster their self-esteems. Clients learn to evaluate self-criticizing thoughts and negative feelings to determine their validity. We have groups for both the individual suffering from the chemical dependency, as well as groups for family members. In a group setting, you will find you are not along in you situation and you can draw on our counselors’ professional expertise, as well as experiences of other addicts and family members. In doing so, you will gain strength and learn how to cope and restore your family system.

» CO-DEPENDENCY COUNSELING

Co-dependency counseling can be individual or group counseling, which will focus on a family member becoming a strong and independent person. This type of counseling helps each person take effective control of his or her life and build self-esteem in the process. The emphasis is on developing the concept that each person deserves love, value and respect in any relationship.

» RELAPSE PREVENTION COUNSELING

The focus is on helping the client identify, reframe and avoid triggers which can cause relapse. This counseling involves learning how to stay away from people, places and things that may have led to relapse in the past. We help clients in learning how to identify distorted thoughts that can lead to depressing or anxious cues which can lead to relapse.

Evaluations/Assessments

Part of the reason for our high success rate at ExtraCare Health Services, LLC is our initial client evaluation/assessment when you enter our program. Parents and spouses are part of the initial evaluation process, as they will become an integral part of each person’s recovery program. A detailed history, psychological testing and urine testing will help determine the client’s chemical dependency and set treatment goals. Our trained counselors also determine the best intake sense (visual, auditory or kinesthetic) to prioritize in each person’s treatment program. In addition, the evaluation/assessment determines if the client is best suited to a male or female counselor. Remember, at ExtraCare, you are unique and we will develop the best program suited for YOU!

Testing

» PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING

Psychological tests are performed at each initial evaluation/assessment to identify and evaluate the client’s psychological stressors and to set treatment goals.

» URINE TESTING

Urinalysis is an integral part of our sixteen week program, and is performed on a regular basis to insure abstinence from chemical substances by our clients. At ExtraCare, our urine testing consists of Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry. Each test covers a ten-drug panel (with alcohol, if needed).

Referrals

» OTHER CLINICIANS

At ExtraCare Health Services, L.L.C., we always have the best interest of our clients in mind. Therefore, at times, we will suggest additional counseling services that will work in adjunct to our program. These referrals may be made to psychiatrists (for medication management) or clinicians specializing in eating disorders or marriage counseling.

» INPATIENT PROGRAMS

We, at ExtraCare, believe that our intensive and individualized outpatient treatment program is actually a more viable, convenient, successful and cost-effective alternative to the traditional residential treatment approach for the majority of clients seeking help from substance abuse. As an outpatient, the worker stays on the job and the adolescent stays in school, and both are treated with the family and learn how to build self-esteem and recover in the "real world". Our program lasts for sixteen weeks, is multi-faceted, and is a fraction of the cost of a typical inpatient stay.

However, as part of our client assessment, we may determine a need for an individual to be referred to an inpatient rehabilitation facility. If that is the case, you can be assured that ExtraCare has an excellent working relationship with various inpatient rehabs across the country, and we can suggest a facility that will provide the best care for you or your family member's needs. Our counselors will determine the most effective continuum of care, and will work closely with the inpatient facility in setting up an excellent aftercare program at ExtraCare.

Phone Consultations

If you are in a part of the country that is not easily accessible to our facilities in New Jersey, we provide a phone service consultation with our Clinical Director of ExtraCare Health Services, John Kelly. Mr. Kelly can provide an in-depth evaluation/assessment with the person or family member seeking treatment.  Often, a person interested in obtaining treatment (especially for the first time or if past treatment protocols have failed) will need guidance in selecting a program that will help them in their success of abstaining from drugs or alcohol. Many parents are also unsure of which direction to turn or how to approach their child whom they may suspect is abusing drugs or alcohol. This phone consultation can answer the questions as to How, When, Where and Why someone should obtain substance abuse counseling.
